Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Android) review.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is the game that got it all started for me, as I’ve said more than a  few times. So it holds a special place in my life when it comes to my gaming and it always will. I played it to no end on the Sega Genesis and after Sega went out of major console manufacturing and released games on other consoles I played Sonic 2 on some of those collection games as well. I’ve also played it on my PC. Basically I’ve bought the game several times and I’ve enjoyed it no matter which console it has been on. But I think I have discovered the version that’s the best of them all, except the Genesis edition of course. That’s the newest smartphone edition.

I have an android phone, hence the title, but the same game is available in the iOS market as well. What makes this Sonic the Hedgehog 2 so great is, well, all of it. The game looks great, the sounds are great, and it has a few cool extras. There are leaderboards to compare your scores against other players. There are achievements to get which adds a bit more depth to the game. One of the challenges is to beat Chemical Plant Zone without going underwater. Another is to complete Metropolis Zone (any act)Sonic the Hedgehog 2 without getting hurt. There is a 2 player versus mode, where you can play as Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles. There are even a few time attack modes, one that’s all about beating the levels quickly and one that’s all about beating the game’s bosses quickly.

I think the best thing, however, is that the game offers the Hidden Palace Zone, which was going to be in the game originally but didn’t make the final cut. I’m sure the version we can play today isn’t the exact same as what we would have seen if it made the Genesis cut but that doesn’t matter. What matters is that in this day and age there is a brand new level to enjoy in Sonic 2! I think things like this are cool and are something Sega should consider doing more and more in the future. For as many complaints that they get about their major games, and yet get praised for games like this, you’d think they would want to do more and more like this. I for one hope we see Sonic the Hedgehog 3 remade on smartphones soon but time will tell!

Likes: Hidden Palace Zone, looks great, sounds great, tons of extras to enjoy, can be played with a MOGA controller.

Dislikes: None.

This game is incredible, and not just because at its core this is the game that got it all going for me. It’s because it has a lot of great extras that help it stand out against all of the other versions of the game from the past. The Hidden Palace Zone alone makes that true. It’s a 10/10 and is a perfect game, one of the very best you can get on your phone. Don’t forget: you can get a MOGA (or other similar) controller that makes this game a better experience. It’s very playable without a controller, but it does make it more enjoyable.
