A lot of people around the world love Pokemon, many millions, if not billions to be honest. And I don’t blame them, myself included, because it’s a great series. It has depth (in some ways at least), cool monsters (even if they aren’t as cool as Digimon ;p) and compelling games all over the place, not to mention toys and card games and much more. Pokemon is huge and rightfully so it has truly earned its place in the world. But I’ve always thought the anime was a weak point for Pokemon; the first season or two were great, alongside the first few films. But it slowly got more annoying to me; it was the same thing over and over, Team Rocket was never a real threat (though they can be funny, especially with some of their 4th wall breaking), and it just got old and tired. Sure, they have struck a high note and won’t be going anywhere anytime soon, but the anime has always been weaker than the more-stakes-on-the-line and more adult Digimon.
Digimon’s anime has its flaws too, don’t get me wrong, but the events were life and death, it was truly important that the main characters succeeded. It was more adult in its themes as well and it has grown with its audience, especially the new Digimon Adventure Tri. Digimon has its fails but overall it’s anime has always been the best of the bunch in the fight vs Pokemon, and even with Origins I think that stays true, but still this anime which I just discovered courtesy of my cousin is great. It’s all about Red and his adventures, being firmly based on the games, and I love that so much, and it’s much more of what I want from a Pokemon anime: it’s adult and has consequences. It’s moving and has strong depth too which is very welcome. It feels more like it’s simply catching where Digimon has been for a long time but still better late than never.
Team Rocket isn’t a joke. Pokemon are killed, there are sad story elements, you WANT to watch the next episode to see what happens next (whether you’ve played the games or not). It’s just a very solid and enjoyable show to watch, much better than anything the normal Pokemon show has produced in many years. Don’t get me wrong, some of the other stuff that’s newer from Pokemon I’ve enjoyed a bit, but not all that much to be honest, not until now. However you watch it or find it THIS is the Pokemon anime you’ve always wanted! The only shame is that there isn’t more to it, it’s only 4 episodes long (as far as I saw), but still, I’d take a shorter series of this than a much longer one of what we have been used to.
