There has been a lot of hype surrounding the Skylanders series. And why not? It has made billions of dollars, which is a great thing no matter what industry you’re in. The toys for the game can be seen all over the place at different stores that sell video games. I see tons of them at every Walmart that I go to personally. It is a pretty fun game series too, which helps in getting more sales. It’s not the best, but it’s pretty fun. But there is something to remember about the Skylanders series: it was technically a Spyro series at first. I suppose it still is, but it’s not called Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure or anything with his name in it anymore. You can easily complete all of the games and not even use Spyro, which to me makes it a game that just so happens to have him in it, not a game about him. But it wasn’t always that way. The first three Spyro games in particular have been hailed as the greatest Spyro games out there, and for good reason. Because they are good. Skylanders is good for what it does, but the original Spyro trilogy is so much better. Maybe you don’t agree, but when it comes to games about Spyro, they are far better for sure. But which original game do you consider your favorite?
When I first started playing the Spyro series I played the second game first before the first one, outside of a demo that I tried here and there. It was just like my introduction to gaming: I played Sonic 2 before getting and playing Sonic 1. So it would stand to reason that the second Spyro game is my favorite one. I like everything about it: the homeworlds, the various levels in the game, the bosses, the incredible music, and the skill point challenges. This game in general is just a blast to play and I love beating it all the way through. I had it as a kid, sold it or lost it, and bought it again when I was a teenager. I didn’t have as much of an issue when it came to getting the orbs in the game as when I was young, but it was still great fun. It still is today to me and at this moment I have it paused on the TV. And I love the skill points that I mentioned. I’ve still not ever collected every skill point in the game, which is great because it means that a game that I’ve put countless hours into still has brand new experiences for me. I love when an older classic still has something you’ve never seen, so this is a great thing to me.
This isn’t to say that I don’t love the other two of the trilogy. I love Spyro 1 and the fantasy feeling as you play that game. I think it is very enjoyable, and I think the game itself is the most challenging of the original trilogy, especially the speedway challenges. I also love Spyro the Dragon 3. I love that it has a lot of great levels and homeworlds and I also enjoy that you can play as other characters. They are a supporting cast, so they don’t take up too much of the game, but their levels are still enjoyable. You can even use them in specific challenges that aren’t their normal levels, which I always liked as well. Any of the first three games are great and are worthy of a vote in the best of the rest category. But that game is Spyro 2 for me, since it got me started on Spyro. The homeworlds are my favorite of the trilogy and some of the challenges and levels rank highest to me among the series. Which of the trilogy do you consider your favorite?
